H&M halts sales decline and lifts profit by 27%

H&M regains traction in a key quarter
The Swedish fashion group H&M has closed its third quarter with a return to sales growth, surpassing 5,000 million euros in the period, and with profit soaring 27% compared to the same stretch of the previous year. The company thus manages to cushion the accumulated 4.4% decline it had been carrying from December to August, a figure that confirms fashion consumption in Europe is finding a floor after months of adjustment.
The reading is no small matter for the wholesale business. H&M operates as a thermometer of real demand in the mass distribution segment, and its ability to regain growth in a traditionally strong quarter points to the end customer having returned to buying with somewhat more confidence, albeit with far more finely tuned price criteria than two years ago. It is not euphoria: it is stabilisation with profit, which in fashion retail is almost the same as saying the model holds up.
What this figure means for a footwear shop
For an independent shoe shop or a small chain, H&M's move sends three useful signals:
- The consumer is back, but compares more. The recovery in mass distribution sales does not automatically translate into footfall for the specialised channel, but it does confirm that spending on fashion is not frozen. The footwear shop that offers a clear price-quality proposition has room to capture that demand.
- Pressure in the mid-range. When a volume operator like H&M grows, it usually does so by squeezing prices and turnover. Fashion footwear in the mid-to-low range will compete directly for the same pocket, forcing the shop to differentiate itself through service, selection or specialisation.
- Finer stock management. The profit improvement in mass distribution comes largely from tighter purchasing and less reliance on mass discounts. That same principle applies to the shoe retailer: buy closer to real demand and do not load the warehouse with collections that expire in weeks.
Implications for the footwear wholesaler
From the perspective of the wholesale supplier, the H&M figure reinforces a trend already observed in the Spanish market: orders are shorter, more frequent and with more demanding delivery times. The retail customer no longer wants to commit to large volumes for a full season, but rather to replenish on the go what works and quickly discard what does not.
This has direct consequences for the wholesaler's operations:
- Need for catalogues with broad sizing but fractional stock, capable of serving small orders without breaking margins.
- Greater logistical agility: deliveries in 24-72 hours as a competitive standard, not as a premium service.
- Ability to react to real demand with fast replenishments, something many traditional factories have still not internalised.
The market is not rewarding the one who sells the most during the campaign, but the one who best manages uncertainty. H&M has just proven it in its income statement.
Context of the Spanish market
In Spain, fashion consumption has shown uneven behaviour throughout the year: declines in the spring months, a rebound in summer and a return to caution with the arrival of autumn. Footwear has not been immune to that pattern, with a multi-brand channel that continues to lose ground to vertical chains and pure online players.
The lesson from H&M's quarter is that the Spanish consumer has not stopped buying fashion, but has changed how: less impulse buying, more planning, more search for real value. For the footwear wholesaler, that means price remains relevant, but it is no longer the only argument. Availability, speed of replenishment and coherence of the proposition weigh increasingly in the retailer's decision.
In a scenario where the big operators are growing again, wholesale footwear has a clear opportunity: to position itself as the agile partner that shops need to compete without tying up capital in stock. That is the ground where the next campaign will be won.
