Summer sales arrive with a tailwind for footwear

The summer sales campaign starts this year with particularly favorable prospects for retail, and the footwear sector is no exception. Three factors converge to create a scenario of moderate optimism: weather predictions point to temperatures above the seasonal average, the celebration of the FIFA World Cup shifts consumer attention towards leisure and sports, and international tourism figures continue to break records in Spain. According to the National Association of Large Distribution Companies (Anged), the successive heatwaves forecast will boost demand for light and seasonal products, a category in which open footwear, sandals and espadrilles occupy a central place.

In parallel, the Textile Retail Association (Arte) reports that 66% of its member companies expect sales growth compared to the previous year, with an estimated average increase of 3% during the campaign. Although textiles lead expectations, footwear benefits directly from the summer wardrobe renewal: when a consumer buys a light dress or a swimsuit, the probability that they also purchase a pair of sandals or sports sneakers increases significantly. The study by the Spanish Consumers Association (Asescon) reinforces this trend by noting that 72% of Spaniards plan to buy discounted products, and fashion-footwear appears as one of the favorite categories.

«Extreme temperatures and the festive atmosphere of the World Cup are reshaping spending priorities: the consumer seeks freshness, comfort and a touch of style for their leisure moments», explains an Anged spokesperson. «For the footwear distributor, this translates into a real stock rotation opportunity if they know how to anticipate demand peaks».

What does this mean for your footwear store?

If you run a footwear retail business, the coming months can make a difference in your annual turnover. The heat drives sales of flat sandals, wedges, espadrilles and lightweight sports footwear. But the World Cup adds an extra layer of demand: casual style sneakers, vibrant-colored trainers and even flip-flops with football motifs can become bestsellers. Do not underestimate the power of tourism: coastal areas and large urban centers will receive millions of visitors who will need comfortable footwear for walking, as well as spare options for the beach or pool.

I recommend you analyze your current inventory with a fine-tooth comb. Check which summer references you have in stock, especially those with good margin and historical rotation. If you detect shortages in medium-sized sandals (38-41) or in transitional sports trainers, now is the time to place urgent orders with your wholesale supplier. Remember that sales are not only for clearing surplus; you can also launch cross-promotions: «Buy a dress and get sandals at 30% off» or «Take two pairs of flip-flops and pay for the cheapest». The key is to attract the customer who is already predisposed to spend thanks to the weather and festive atmosphere.

And for the footwear wholesaler?

As a wholesale supplier, the signs are equally encouraging. The forecast 3% growth in textile-footwear retail translates into greater replenishment demand during July and August. Retailers who have not anticipated their stock will come to you with urgent orders. To take advantage of this wave, prepare summer promotional lots: combine sandals of different styles (flat, wedge, sports) with espadrilles and nautical footwear. Include themed packs like «Sandals for the whole family» or «World Cup Collection: sneakers and flip-flops with flags».

Furthermore, anticipate logistical peaks. Heatwaves can affect deliveries if you do not plan routes and schedules. Consider offering special conditions for orders placed before July 15, with priority shipping and volume discounts. Do not forget that international tourists buy Spanish footwear as a souvenir or immediate need, so mid-to-high quality references with Mediterranean design (esparto espadrilles, artisan sandals) can have extra appeal in tourist areas. Communicate these forecasts to your customers through a newsletter or sector note; you will help them make informed purchasing decisions and position yourself as a strategic ally.

Spanish market context: an opportunity you cannot miss

The Spanish footwear market is characterized by strong seasonality, with summer concentrating between 30% and 40% of annual sales. The combination of extreme heat, a global sporting event like the World Cup and the massive arrival of tourists (more than 85 million visitors expected in 2026) creates a consumption cocktail that is hard to match. The autonomous communities of the Mediterranean coast, the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands will be the main hotspots, but major capitals like Madrid and Barcelona will also see an increase in demand for urban and casual footwear.

For wholesalers, this context reinforces the need for an agile distribution network and an updated catalog. Consumer trends point to breathable materials, flexible soles and versatile designs that transition from day to night. The Spanish consumer increasingly values value for money, but also originality and local provenance. If as a wholesaler you can offer footwear made in Spain or with sustainability certifications, you will have a differential selling argument against Asian competition.

In summary, this year's summer sales are not just another campaign. The heat, the World Cup and tourism not only favor consumption, but transform the structure of demand. Taking advantage of this moment requires anticipation, stock management and clear communication with your customers. The window of opportunity is narrow but highly profitable.
