HD Covalco strengthens its presence in the south with eight new cash & carry

HD Covalco, one of the most relevant wholesale groups in Spain, has completed the incorporation of eight cash & carry centers distributed across the provinces of Seville, Málaga, Córdoba, Cádiz and Granada. This operation represents a significant leap in its logistical capillarity in Andalusia, a strategic region for local commerce and retail distribution. Five of the establishments come from operator Dámaso Melero - located in Seville, Málaga, Marbella, Puente Genil and Jerez - while the remaining three are added from the Juncaril and Cash Sierra Sur groups. Although for now the centers keep their commercial name, the group plans to integrate them under its Comerco or Comarket banners depending on the profile of the wholesale customer they target.

At the same time, HD Covalco has submitted an offer to acquire seven stores from the Oroyes chain, in insolvency proceedings, located in Castellón, Oropesa, Cabanes and Benicàssim. These points of sale - former Oromarket - remain closed and their purchase is subject to judicial decision. The company thus combines already materialized operations with ongoing moves, evidencing an aggressive growth strategy through organic expansion and acquisition that seeks to gain size in both the wholesale business and local food distribution.

Implications for wholesalers and footwear stores

For a footwear wholesaler, this expansion represents a clear sign of the concentration process in the traditional wholesale channel. When an operator achieves greater volume and geographic coverage, it can negotiate better conditions with suppliers in non-food sectors - including footwear - and offer independent stores a broader assortment. Furthermore, the presence of cash & carry in more Andalusian locations reduces logistics costs for retailers who previously traveled to more distant centers or relied on intermediary distributors. The consolidation of these infrastructures can make it easier for a footwear wholesaler to access these spaces as a customer or supplier, provided agreements are established with HD Covalco's central purchasing office.

For an independent footwear store, the news is relevant for two reasons. First, because a well-stocked cash & carry in its province can become an agile supplier for replenishment purchases, avoiding stockouts. Second, because competition among large wholesale operators can result in better prices and conditions for small businesses. However, the store must remain alert to possible changes in access conditions or in the offer of non-food categories. Andalusia has a highly atomized network of shoe stores, where every margin euro counts; an efficient wholesale network can make a difference in profitability.

The concentration of the wholesale channel in Spain is redefining the supply routes for independent footwear. Andalusia is a thermometer of this trend.

Spanish market context

HD Covalco's move is part of a broader trend of restructuring wholesale commerce in Spain. After years of contraction of small businesses and the advance of large surfaces, wholesale groups seek to gain scale to offer logistical efficiency and negotiation capacity. Andalusia, with its geographic extension and high number of municipalities, is an ideal laboratory to test cash & carry models that are later replicated in other communities. For the footwear sector, this dynamic implies that specialized wholesalers will have to reinforce their value proposition - service, assortment, immediacy - to avoid being displaced by the generic offer of large operators.

Likewise, the operation with Oroyes in Castellón shows that HD Covalco is also looking at the Valencian Community, where the footwear tradition is very strong (Elda, Elche, Villena). If the group decides to incorporate footwear lines in its centers, it could compete directly with traditional distributors. For now, the declared focus remains food, but retail history shows that when a wholesaler gains scale it usually expands categories. Footwear professionals should monitor these movements to anticipate changes in their supply chain.

Key points for the footwear professional

  • Strategic locations: The new centers in Seville, Málaga, Córdoba, Cádiz and Granada cover most of the Andalusian capitals, improving access to high-density commercial areas.
  • Possible footwear integration: Although unconfirmed, the purchasing power of a group like HD Covalco could include footwear in its non-food offer, especially during peak season.
  • Logistics competition: Footwear wholesalers serving Andalusian stores will need to review their delivery times and prices to compete with the immediacy of cash & carry.
