Notton resurrected: the iconic trekking brand returns to the market with Segarra
Spanish mountain footwear recovers one of its most legendary names. Notton, the Rioja-based firm that had been in bankruptcy proceedings since 2024, has been acquired by Calzados Canós García (Segarra), a centenary company based in La Vall d'Uixó, Castellón. The news, reported by Revista del Calzado, confirms that the legendary trekking and mountaineering models will once again be available in the wholesale and retail market.
As explained by Ernesto Canós, manager of the purchasing firm, Notton's previous phase was interrupted by "poor financial management by the investment group that had been running it since 2020". This caused the cessation of all activity and the closure of facilities in September 2024, despite the product's prestige. Now, with the backing of Segarra —a brand with over a hundred years of history and specialized in work and safety footwear—, Notton returns with a clear roadmap: to recover its essence and its position in the distribution channel.
"The immediate goal is to restore trust in the brand and put back into circulation the models that should never have disappeared," stated Canós. Production will resume at the Castellón facilities, leveraging Segarra's industrial experience, and the technical DNA that characterized Notton for decades will be maintained.
What does this rescue mean for the wholesale footwear market?
For sports, mountain and outdoor footwear stores, the return of Notton represents a double opportunity. On one hand, they recover a brand with a loyal customer base that has been orphaned of product for over a year. On the other, they gain access to a collection that needs no introduction: trekking boots, mountain shoes and technical footwear with a very good price-quality ratio.
From the wholesaler's perspective, Segarra's move is strategic. In a context of sector concentration, where many small brands disappear or are absorbed by large groups, the decision to rescue Notton reinforces the thesis that the value of an iconic brand remains a tangible asset. For distributors, having Notton in the catalog means offering a product with immediate brand awareness, without the need for positioning investments.
- For the retailer: replenishment of a range that already worked before the bankruptcy. The best-selling models (such as high-top boots and approach shoes) will be available again in the coming months.
- For the wholesaler: possibility to negotiate preferential terms on the first post-rescue collections, as Segarra seeks to rebuild the distribution network and will reward historical partners.
- For the Spanish market: the customer exodus towards international brands is halted. The return of Notton consolidates the national outdoor footwear offering, which competes with firms like Bestard, Trezeta or Meindl.
Context of the footwear sector in Spain
The Spanish footwear industry is going through a moment of transformation. According to data from the Spanish Footwear Industries Federation (FICE), in 2025 the sector grew 3.2% in revenue, but intermediate brands —those with less than 50 years of history— suffered an 8% drop in sales. In this scenario, brands with legacy and reputation are the ones that resist best.
Notton fits perfectly into that category. Founded in the 1960s in La Rioja, it specialized in technical footwear for mountain activities, with notable recognition among hiking and climbing enthusiasts. Its disappearance in 2024 left a void that brands like Alpina or Tatra began to fill. Now, with Segarra's industrial backing and logistical capacity, Notton has the opportunity to regain market share without large R&D investments, since the molds and technical specifications have been preserved.
Canós's decision also responds to an economy of scale logic: Segarra already manufactures safety and work footwear with processes similar to those of trekking. Incorporating Notton into its portfolio allows it to diversify risk and attack a growing niche (outdoor already generates more than 1.2 billion euros annually in Spain).
Practical implications for your business
If you have a footwear store or are a wholesale distributor, the return of Notton should be on your radar. We recommend:
- Contact Segarra to learn the purchasing conditions for the first collections.
- Evaluate your current stock of mountain brands and identify potential gaps that Notton can fill.
- Prepare a communication campaign aimed at customers who were asking about Notton during its absence.
Experience shows that when a brand with pedigree returns with good industrial backing, demand is usually immediate. Don't wait for other distributors to get ahead.
